REVEALED: Nyong'o wired Sh 900 million to Jersey Island

The Kenyan DAILY POST Politics 22:59

Thursday March 24 - The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) saga widened further on Wednesday, after sources close to Medical Services Minister Prof Anyang Nyong'o revealed to the DAILY POST that the minister wired Sh 900 million to his personal offshore account in Jersey Island.

The transaction of the money was done in Co-operative Bank Nairobi where money was drawn from NHIF account and transferred to Prof Nyong’o bank account in Jersey Island.

The amount was transferred on March 12 where a total of Sh560 million was wired, followed by a second transaction on March 19 of Sh340 million. The two transactions amount to Sh 900 million.

The money is part of Sh 1.2 billion that NHIF was to release to health service providers across the country for the first three months of this year.

Jersey Island is known to be safe haven for proceeds acquired by questionable means.

Last year Nambale MP Chris Okemo and Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) former managing director Samuel Gichuru were wanted by Jersey authorities for allegedly laundering Sh900 million belonging to Kenya’s taxpayer. Okemo and Gichuru face fraud and abuse of office charges.

The two were accused of receiving kickbacks from International and local company for KPLC business, mostly between 1999 and 2002.

It is important to note that most politicians in Africa and in particular Kenya have offshore accounts in Jersey and Virgin islands because their jurisdictions are lenient on illegal money. These two areas are a safe haven for money launderers.
